SPAM – What you need to know

Online spam is using electronic mail systems to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately. Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services. There is no doubt that you will receive spam on a regular basis in your University account.

If you receive unwanted spam in your account, forward it through to Spam@anu.edu.au. This address goes into the ANU anti-spam services, and learns about new spam when sent emails. This ensures that when new rounds of spam email comes through, the system can learn about them and then block them.

A lot of messages that come through to user accounts can also be stopped by utilizing an unsubscribe option. If you receive an email, such as a newsletter or brochure of new products, from otherwise legitimate companies, scroll down to the bottom of the email and check for a link that allows you to unsubscribe from the mailing list.
