A number of Mac computers around the world (and more than a few on campus) have been discovered to be compromised with the Flashback trojan. The Trojan spreads through a vulnerability in the Java client for macs.
Java is not installed by default in cleans installations of Mac OS X 7 (Lion) but may be present on upgraded systems.
Apple have released updated versions of Java including removal tools, as well as a standalone detection and removal tool for systems without Java present. Both are available through the Apple Software Update service.
Don’t need Java? You may want to remove it.
