If someone walked up to you on the street, told you they worked for your bank and needed to confirm your PIN number and account details, would you hand this information over without thinking twice?
Unfortunately the skill set of picking up on scams in real life doesn’t translate easily over to the online world. You should treat any email that arrives in your inbox from someone you don’t know as a stranger, and apply the same logic you would face to face. If an email arrives telling you to confirm your password or your account will be deactivated, or that your webmail is full and you need to visit this site not related to the ANU to confirm your details then chances are that it’s a scam.
No legitimate business will send you an email asking for your details. No ANU system will ever send you an email from outside of the University asking to confirm your username, password or email address.
The IT Security team is here to help. If you see a targeted scam send it through to spam@anu.edu.au or through to it.security@anu.edu.au if you aren’t sure.
